The ferry from Samui to Phangan. We went for a weekend and stayed almost eight years.
We lived in Bangkok for a couple of weeks, sorting out paperwork and getting used to a city that smells all at once of jasmine, grilled meat and the exhaust of thousands of tuk-tuks. Then we decided to fly to Samui for the weekend, to take a break from forms and certificates, and from Samui we took the ferry over to neighboring Phangan, an island you can ride around on a motorbike in a couple of hours and where the whole world goes for the full moon parties. The weekend stretched to almost eight years, and the layover I had thought of as a temporary point on the map became a separate life.
