Mt.Gox was meant to be an exchange for Magic cards. The domain gathered dust until it started selling bitcoin. Source: Tourtefouille, CC BY-SA 4.0
The domain mtgox.com was bought in 2007 by the American programmer Jed McCaleb for a site where players of the card game Magic: The Gathering would trade cards. The name stood for Magic: The Gathering Online eXchange. The site never really got going, and the domain gathered dust for several years. In the summer of 2010 McCaleb read about bitcoin on Slashdot, decided that people needed somewhere to buy and sell the new coins, and in a few days turned the abandoned card exchange into a bitcoin exchange. It opened in July, and a few days after the post on Habr, coins there were worth a few cents.
