The Missing Cryptoqueen

A huge dark arena from the back rows: thousands of silhouetted spectators, and far away on a bright stage the tiny figure of a woman in a ball gown.illustration
Wembley Arena, June 2016. Thousands of people in the hall are told about the bitcoin killer, which has no blockchain.

On June 11, 2016, a woman in a ball gown walked onto the stage of London’s Wembley Arena, where rock stars usually play. Ruja Ignatova, a Bulgarian with a German passport, a doctor of law who had previously worked as a consultant at McKinsey, was telling several thousand people in the hall about the cryptocurrency OneCoin, which she had founded two years earlier. Ignatova called her coin the bitcoin killer and promised that soon people would be paying with it everywhere.
