In the summer of 2017 the world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather posted on Instagram a photo with a bank card from the crypto startup Centra Tech and a caption saying that he now spent bitcoins on everything. The producer DJ Khaled called the Centra card a game changer. The startup promised a Visa and Mastercard card that would let you pay with cryptocurrency in any store, and raised more than $25 million in its ICO. It had no partnerships with Visa or Mastercard. Its CEO, the Harvard graduate Michael Edwards, whose photo was on the website, did not exist; the founders had made him up, using a photo of somebody else. Centra’s founder, Sohrab Sharma, was sentenced to eight years. In November 2018 Mayweather and Khaled paid the SEC for not telling their followers that they had received $100,000 and $50,000 for the promotion.
