Pig Butchering

A hand holds a phone in a dark room; on the screen, a chat and a photo of a girl by the sea at sunset.illustration
The first message always looks like a mistake: “Hi, is this Lisa?” The pig gets fattened for months.

The message arrives from an unknown number and looks like a mistake. “Hi, is this Lisa? We agreed to meet on Saturday.” You politely reply that they have the wrong number. The other person apologizes, makes a sweet joke, sends a photo of a beautiful girl against a backdrop of sea or of a successful man next to an expensive car, and within a week you are already texting every day. They tell you about a boring job, about their mom, about their dog. A month later, quite in passing, they tell you about an uncle who makes money on cryptocurrency and about a platform where you can try it with a small sum. The first hundred dollars grows, and you are even allowed to withdraw it. The second hundred you put in on your own. When you have transferred everything you have and try to take it out, it turns out you need to pay a tax. Then a fee. Then the other person stops replying.
