In 2017 eight Google researchers published a paper titled “Attention Is All You Need.” It described a neural network architecture the authors called the transformer. Five years later ChatGPT ran on transformers, and then all the other large language models did too, and the paper became one of the most cited scientific works of the century. All eight authors eventually left Google and founded their own companies. Seven stayed in artificial intelligence. The eighth, Illia Polosukhin, a native of Kharkiv, went into blockchain.
