The Dread Pirate Roberts

A small wooden cabin among low oaks at dusk, one window lit, cloth-covered jars and plastic tubs on the porch.illustration
Near Austin, early 2011. Silk Road’s first goods were grown in a cabin, and they could be paid for only in bitcoin.

In January 2011 Ross Ulbricht, a twenty-six-year-old physics graduate who had abandoned science for what he called an economic experiment, grew a batch of hallucinogenic mushrooms in a cabin outside Austin. He needed the first product for a shop he had in mind. The shop opened in February, in the hidden part of the internet that you reach through the Tor browser, which scrambles a visitor’s trail through a chain of other people’s computers. It was called Silk Road, and almost anything that is forbidden to sell in ordinary places could be sold there. Payment was in bitcoins only.
