Thailand was the mecca for the hustlers of the ICO era, and for the next generation that mecca became Dubai. There is no personal income tax there, you can buy an apartment in a skyscraper with cryptocurrency, and in summer it is forty-five degrees Celsius, so all of life happens under air conditioning, in shopping malls, hotel lobbies and private clubs, where at the neighboring tables sit people who are wanted in various countries for various things. After 2022 a noticeable part of Russian-speaking crypto moved there. Many of the characters in this book lived there or still do. Among them are Sasha Ivanov of Waves; Roman Semenov of Tornado Cash, whom the FBI links, among other places, to Dubai; and the former communications minister Nikolai Nikiforov, who has been charged in the Finiko case. One of Finiko’s co-founders, Edvard Sabirov, lived there too, until he was detained and extradited to Russia.
