That summer, as Celsius, Voyager and BlockFi were collapsing, Bankman-Fried played the rescuer. He gave loans to the casualties and offered to buy them cheaply, and journalists compared him to the banker John Pierpont Morgan, who in the panic of 1907 rescued American banks with his own money. That same year he became the second-largest individual donor to the Democratic Party after George Soros, giving about $40 million to the elections.
